The Level Legal Guide to Legalweek 2024

Welcome to the Big Apple!

The first thing you need to know from The Level Legal Guide to Legalweek is that locals never call it “the Big Apple.” It’s almost always “the city.” Everything vaguely north of the Bronx is “upstate.” New Jersey is “Jersey.” Long Island is “Longisland.” And Connecticut is … “Connecticut.”

This Guide aims to show you the more human side to Legalweek 2024. The information comes from locals, like the New York Hilton Midtown concierge, plus Legalweek veterans. Delight in different ways to experience the conference. Make the most of New York City’s incredible food scene. Give yourself some time away from the Legalweek itself.

Level Legal believes in “Making Legal Human.” This philosophy is at the core of our eDiscovery, managed review, forensics, and consulting services – as well as our approach to this Guide. For us, Legalweek is all about making new and fostering existing connections. Putting faces to names. Exploring the city like a local and experiencing something new, whether this is your first or twenty-first visit.

A Word From a New York Hilton Midtown Concierge

Looking for a quiet spot to have a private conversation? Impromptu meeting popped up and you need a space away from the Legalweek hustle and bustle? We reached out to the New York Hilton Midtown’s concierge for insider answers.

His best tip: Rout to your company’s sales team to look into booking an extra suite, or smaller conference room, so it’ll always be available to you and your team throughout the conference week. This can be your team’s quiet oasis to meet clients, take a break, or simply focus on some work.

Nothing available? Or looking for something more fun? Reach out to the Hilton’s concierge at any time. The team knows all the opening hours of nearby restaurants and will be able to make a reservation during their off-hours, which should provide a more relaxed and quiet setting to engage with your guest.

1) Convenience of Omni Pay

Almost every subway station now supports Omni Pay, allowing you to tap in with your credit card or iPhone. If you have Apple Pay, it’s even more seamless. This modern payment system eliminates the need for buying specific subway tickets, making your transit smooth and hassle-free.

Google Maps is an invaluable tool for navigating the subway system. It provides detailed instructions on which train to take and where to go, making it reasonably intuitive to plan trips to various parts of the city, from the lower financial district to the upper east side. You can also use the MTA website to plan trips and check for delays. (It’s New York City, so you never know what might happen!)

3) Beyond Midtown

While staying in Midtown is convenient, don’t hesitate to explore beyond. The subway system offers easy access to must-see locations throughout New York that you might otherwise miss. For instance, you can find out firsthand why many locals consider Brooklyn to be the hub of cool.

Legalweek Unlocked: Five Insider Tips

1 ) Start Your Day With a Refreshing Walk or Run

Central Park is a few blocks away and provides a green haven to clear your mind. Better yet, go to Ari Kaplan’s 6 a.m. Rise and Run on January 31. Meeting point: the lobby of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in front of the sculpture, across from the registration desk. It’s a great way to meet people, especially if you prefer a healthier alternative to evening socials.

2) Navigate Like a Pro

Make sure to check your coat and heavy items for easier movement. Consider staying outside the Hilton for better air quality and to avoid the common “Legalweek cold.” Wear comfortable shoes and carve out time to check out the vendor booths in the exhibit hall.

3) Maximize Networking Opportunities

The Hilton Lobby Bar is a prime spot for networking. Arrive early to secure a good table and be ready to meet a mix of new and familiar faces. First time at Legalweek? Start at the registration desk and be amazed with what an ice-breaker standing in line for your name tag can be.

4) Embrace Unplanned Encounters

Don’t overschedule. Sessions often run over time and there’s value in carving aside time for unplanned meetings. Allowing time for spontaneous interactions often leads to the most rewarding experiences.

5) Escape to Quiet Hideaways

Find your go-to quiet spots, like the food court near 52nd Street and 6th Avenue, early on. The concierge floor at the Hilton is another more controlled spot where you can duck off for that unplanned meeting.

“Legal Tech”: A Legalweek Drinking Game

As a nod to Legalweek’s former name, “Legal Tech,” we thought this could be a fun and light-hearted drinking game for all those who imbibe. Just like a well-crafted argument, this game is simple, engaging, and slightly intoxicating.

The Rules: Whenever someone says “Legal Tech,” it’s time for a little sip of your drink. Whether it’s during a panel discussion, a casual conversation, or a keynote speech, keep your ears open for the phrase. The game is simple:

After-Hours Mention Challenge

If “Legal Tech” was mentioned during any presentation or panel throughout the day, make a note and compare with colleagues during the evening’s social events. Whoever counted the most “Legal Tech” mentions takes a sip of his drink.

Networking Nip

If you hear “Legal Tech” during a networking event or casual chat, take two sips. It’s like a legal precedent, but for your taste buds.

Pun-ishment for the Brave

If “Legal Tech” is part of a joke or a pun, finish your drink! Think of it as the closing argument of your beverage.

Remember, this game is all in the spirit of camaraderie and conviviality, much like a congenial court recess. Drink responsibly, know your limits. Cheers to “Legal Tech” and the evolution of this fantastic event!

Our Framework

Understand.

During this phase, we work to step away from any assumptions and guesses about what our customers needs, and let our research findings inform our decision-making. We learn more about our customers, their problems, wants, and needs, and the environment or context in which they will use the solution we offer.

Our Framework

Define.

During the Define phase, we analyze our research findings from the Understand phase and determine what is the most important problem to solve — and why. This step defines the goal. Then we can give a clear problem statement, describing what our customers’ needs are that we are trying to solve, making sure that we heard and defined their problem correctly.

Our Framework

Solve.

This phase is an important part of the discipline in our process. People often settle for the first solution, but the most obvious solution is often not the right one. During the Solve phase, we brainstorm collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to generate many unique solutions. We then analyze our potential solutions and make choices about which are the best to pursue based on learnings in the Understand phase.

Our Framework

Build & Test.

This phase is critical in developing the right solution to our customers’ problem. An organized approach to testing can help avoid rework and create exceptional outcomes. Starting small and testing the solution, we iterate quickly, before deploying solutions across the entire project.

Our Framework

Act.

During this phase, the hard work of prior phases comes to life in our customers’ best solution. The research, collaboration, and testing performed prior to project kick-off ensure optimal results.

Our Framework

Feedback.

At the project completion, we convene all stakeholders to discuss what went well, what could have been better, and how we might improve going forward. We call these meetings “Retrospectives,” and we perform them internally as a project team, and with our external customers. The Retrospective is one of the most powerful, meaningful tools in our framework.
